Belle is quite right Lucy, I have never had any problems getting many of the plants on her list from my local garden centres and nursery. When all else fails they get a reference book out and can readily identify the plants from that, the Latin name of any plant is the key to what you want wherever you are.

My only reservation would be with regard to Oleander. All parts of the plant are toxic, even the smoke if you burn any parts you cut back.

Having a plegma fence all around the perimiter of my home I chose to use Bouganvillea, mainly the small leaved varieties which are less virulent as they grow, I do keep it cut back hard, especially at the front where it will block the sea view, but it does look lovely trailing down the 5mt rough stone retaining wall there when it is in flower. It is also sheep proof! I also have a couple of nursery grown Clematis and Honeysuckles mixed in, (brought from UK with the compost washed off, in hand luggage). In addition I have Campsis (also needs cutting back hard) Techomaris Capensis, and Plumbago. Now they are established, together with the Olive trees, they need little or no water and provide excellent shelter for the rest of my garden, protecting it from the strong winds which whip over the hillside and from the North, straight off the sea, where the house is located.

If you can obtain one, try and get a copy of Mary Jaqueline Tyrwitt's book 'Making a Garden on a Greek Hillside'. There is lots of valuable information in it.

Good luck

Kathleen

I suppose you all know that the temporary Prime Minister is called Mr. Pikramenos? Do you, however, know that this translates as 'Mr. Embittered' in English? Also that the leader of the 'Independent Greeks' party is Mr. Kammenos, which translates as 'Mr. Burnt'.

Just thought you'd like to know that.

As for the next elections.....it's anybody's guess. One thing is for sure and that is that the last elections certainly put the cat among the European pigeons.

I can't help but believe that the wily Greeks will find a way to stay in Europe, stay in the euro and get better terms.

It will be interesting to see how things turn out.

Cost of Living in Greece - Bank Run - Exit from Euro

Whether or not Greece does go out of the euro it is obviously prudent not to keep more than the basic minimum of funds in a Greek bank account at the current time. I expect most expats are doing this, but I hope it is all.

As blackdog implies a bundle of cash in euros proverbially stuffed under the bed is not a bad idea in case the banks close. If Greece leaves the euro they will close for at least a week whilst they convert everything to drachma. The shops could close as well (Dixons has already announced it will close its stores) in order to re-price etc, so a few extra tins of beans might be a good idea as well!

At previous difficult moments I have consistently thought that Greece would stay in the euro. I am not so sure this time. All the pundits are saying there is a 75% chance it will leave soon.

If it does leave it most probably will be uncontrolled. Most likely it will be triggered by ordinary Greek people who will create a run on the banks rather than being caused by posturing leftwing politicians daring the Eurozone to stop aid for fear of contagion to other European countries. I think they call this game "chicken". A run on the banks could happen before the election for fear of who might end up in power. How long would the ECB carry on providing liquidity to what could be insolvent banks - 4 of them appear to be in the most dodgy state as blackdog points out.

The leftwing Greek politicians are selling the idea to the electorate that it is a choice between austerity and the euro or even austerity or no austerity ie back to the good old days. The reality is staying in the euro means austerity; going out of the euro means austerity as well, only worse and longer lasting. It's power these guys are seeking; they never previously had any hope, but now they smell their time is coming if they are ruthless enough. The electorate are pawns in the game.

Still let's be happy for what we have got and can't be taken away: warn sunshine and a beautiful island. Mind you I suppose they could invent the special sunshine tax.

carolcat
all I can suggest is as we do in Scotland for external barbeques and wood burners (chimnea type cast iron) a light wire brush to clean it and wiped over with a very oily cloth (cooking oil) does the trick here.
