Hi again,
Can anyone tell me if the cost per kw has changed in the last 18 months? If so can you say what the costs were then and now? We have just been given a bill from our builder for electric for 18 months and its over 2 thousand three hundred euro does this sound about right? What is the standing charge and do we pay vat etc. He is a very nice man but I need to be sure before I pay.
       Thanks for any help.

have you seen the actual bill?yes there is a standing charge and yes vat is charged on the total ammount. Is this a new supply?if so the connection etc.could be why the bill is so high.ask to have it itemised or a least a photocopy of the bill so you can translate it .We pay about 70-80every two months.but the bill includes tv fee and local council bills.

BJ

There is a website that belongs to the Electric Company and it is very good, you can find out all the charges, Telephone numbers etc. And it has an English connection.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Sunrise,

I couldn't remember the URL. I just tried it and the home page wouldn't load properly - all appeared in "cod" Greek - don't know if it's them or my system as it didn't improve even with Greek encoding. Still, I guessed at a couple of links and found the English page which is

http://www.dei.gr/echome.asp?lang=2

Thanks again for the lead.

Filippos.

I reported a little while ago that I thought the cost of electricity had almost doubled.  I now think I was wrong.

It was the first time I had received a bill on a three phase meter.  It looks like the figures given on the DEH web site, mentioned above, for the cost per kwh only apply strictly to single phase meters.  When applied to a three phase supply the cost per kwh is multiplied by the square root of 3, which happens to be the ratio between the phase to phase voltage and the phase to neutral voltage.  I haven’t managed to get this verified yet but I am pretty sure it is the case.  If you have a three phase supply, which many modern houses in Crete do, you need to increase the cost on the web site by this factor to estimate your bill.  The bill also tells you the next reading date so you can check the reading on the same day.

Warwick,
I have not seen the bill as its still a builders account, He has done the cost and just said to pay. Also its difficult to calculate square roots? I think I am too old and must admit I have no idea how to do it.   Thanks for the info though its much appreciated.   BJ

Sorry, the factor is about 1.732.

Warwick

PS  If you click on Start then All Programs then Accessories you should find a calculator program which has a sqare root function on it, sqrt.

We have 3 phase electricity and it is only the minimum rate (standing charge) that differs between 1 and 3  not the cost per kWh. that is the same rate for both
Our Tariff is actually General 3 phase (Commercial) not Residential but if you look at all of the types that are on the list it is the same.
My husband did work ours out first and we have had 4 bills to compare.
You will also see that if you have 4 or more children you get cheaper electricity.

Warwick, knowing you as a polite gentleman, I assume "sqrt" is the abbreviation of "square root" or are you trying to attract the attention of a Tirade Launcher by calling BJ an stunted water jet?

My post was based on the following facts:

My bill showed a consumption of 765 kwh for the four month period
The cost was calculated as 765 x 0.12063 €/kwh
The DEH web site shows the cost per kwh for less than 800 kwh as 0.06987 €
The ratio of 0.12063/0.06987 is 1.72649 which is very close to the square root of 3.

If, as you say, the cost per kwh is the same for single and three phase, why was my bill not calculated using 765x.006987?

Warwick

Just checked the DEH Site and the Rate of 0.12063/kWh actually comes up under the General Tariff C21 we are under C22 so looks like you might be under the wrong rate.
I.E. general rather than residential.
Is your Villa just your residential home?, if so maybe you need to check with the Electric Company.
I would look at your Bill first, bottom left hand corner box has your Tarrif in it and then check that against the site info.
Hope this is of some use.

Hmmmm! This is going to be a useful reference thread I think.

I and my neighbours have yet to receive a bill for our new homes. On calling at the DEH office in Rethymnon and trying to pay something 'on account' we were referred to piles of files sitting behind the helpful guy we were speaking to, and told that the accounts for many new properties had still not been set up. 'Don't worry', he said smiling happily, 'keep your money, you will get a big bill.'

Sounds ominous to me Sad

Thanks for that, Sunrise.  You are correct.  We are on C21 tariff, which appears as Γ21 on the bill.

I suspect, but don’t know for certain, that this is because we are still on a temporary supply.  I believe, but again don’t know for certain, that this will change to C1, Γ1, when we move to the final supply, hopefully very soon.  All issues with the tax office are resolved and our developer is currently collecting all the signatures that DEH demand.  There was a small delay in getting the supply finalised because we were registered with a tax office in northern Greece.  We either had to get all the documents cleared at that tax office, which might be difficult since everybody else involved in the process is registered in Chania, or wait until we moved and registered in Chania.  We took the latter route.

Obviously I didn’t research this thoroughly enough.  F-  must try harder.  It does mean that BJ is likely to be on the same tariff, since it is the builder’s supply he is being asked to pay, so the rate I quoted is likely to be the one applicable.

Once I have final confirmation that the C21 is being used because we are on a temporary supply I will post the information here.  It does mean that it is worth getting on a C1 tariff as quickly as possible.  A 70% premium is not very nice.
