There are many in the west, especially in Kokkino Horio, Plaka, Almirida, Vamos, Gavalohori, Kefalas etc. I believe there are quite a few in and around Elounda and Agios Nikolaos but I'm not familiar with that part of the island.

Hi Andy
Not sure which Analipsi your Mom & Dad are in.  However we live in Agios Nikolaos, and there is a very large British community in and around this area.  I will say though that it is always quieter in the winter season, with fewer bars and restaurants open - it's knowing which ones are there.  We have been here just over 18 months, and really do not regret making the move.  Although having a number of places to go where there are Brits to talk to does help.

If your Mom & Dad are not too far away, we could always meet up?

Hope this helps.

Hi Andy,

Certainly in the Aghios Nikolaos area there is no need to feel "out of it". We live in a traditional Greek village where only a few of the Greeks speak any English, but there are around a dozen English residents in what is quite a large village. In other words enough English people so that even if you don't travel into Aghios Nikolaos, you will inevitably say hello to an English speaker every day whilst still maintaing the traditional Greek feel.

Even in the winter in Aghios Nikolaos there are numerous activities including painting classes, a theatre group, a gardening club, as well as a cinema and numerous opportunities to get together with other northern Europeans for coffee mornings, etc.

Istron/Kalo Horio and Elounda boast a much larger proportion of Brits as well as Dutch, Germans & Scandinavians, many of whom are also fluent in English. PM us if you need further information - we'll be happy to help.  Grin

Regards,

many thanks to all those who kindly answered my question about my mum and dad - if anyone out there has any useful addresses of agents that will allow long term rentals i would be pleased to hear of their whereabouts. Having spoken to mum and dad i think maybe they could be living in the Elounda/Agios nicolas area by the end of the season. many thanks again.x Smiley

Andy

I remember seeeing a programme about ex-pats in Spain, and their levels of satisfaction with their new lifestyles. The ones who were happiest were those who tried not to rely on the ex-pat community for their social life; the ones who had attempted to learn the language and to integrate with the community as well as having Brit friends were by far the most contented.
I know that Greek is particularly difficult for "older" students ( I don't know how old your parents are), but it would be worth their while picking up as much Greek as possible. The Cretans are a hospitable breed, and having Greek friends is an essential part of being in Crete for many of us.
I am not condemning ex-pat groups, in fact I think they are invaluable for  both Brit and Greek communities as their activities are frequently aimed at fostering better understanding.

Just a thought.

Dear Andy,
I am so sorry your mother does not like the Analipsi area, the only problem is what? Analipsi. We live in Analipsi in south-east Crete and moved out 14months ago and have no intensions of going back.It took us a while to settle but it would be the same anywhere you move to everything seems so strange at first. If it is our Analipsi your mother has moved to, tell her to come down to the Notos bar at lunch even only for coffee and she will soon make friends when we moved out here there was about 30 couples now there is about forty of us and the number is growing.
We often go to BBQs and partys so life is never dull. Its a pity you never gave your parents name as i would try to locate them.
Yours
Mary and Steve
