Hello to all BICs, from the family "Zeus"
My Wife and I are currently working and living in The Sultanate of Oman in the Middle East at the Mo!!!
We have already booked our first fact finding holiday for Mid October.  Cool
Both of us have read quite a lot of the threads in the forum already, and have been well impressed by the amount of information you get from the site.
However!!!!! what would any (OLD HAND BIC) advise to do for a first visit to the Island, we have 10 Days in mid october From The 10th - 20th.
Any suggestions would be welcome, We are both looking forward to our impending move to Crete in the future, but are in no rush to jump in with our eyes shut.
Please advise

Regards the Zeus's Smiley

Lea & Lou,

Thanks for the reply, We are a mixed couple "IE" I am Scottish and the Other half is from south of the Border,!!!!!!!!!!!!

I left the British Forces 4 years ago, and have been working in the middle east ever since. First in Qatar, then 2 years in Dubai UAE, and now have been working in Oman since November last year.

Like I said on my first post I would just like a steer in the right direction as to what to do for a first visit to Crete, bearing in mind I want to settle there in the future.
I was stationed in Cyprus while serving and liked the Med life style.

So any pointers would be gratefull.

regards The Zeus's

Hi Zues, come for an oliday ave a butchers at the island, go to and fro speak to some ex pats and some locals, listen to all you are told and believe arf of it.

Take your time sample the way of living and then bugger off home and ave a very serious think.

My opinion is you will probably love it but like the good lord said
opinions are like arseholes   everyones  got one

cheers good luck Paul

Take your time!!!

Crete is a big island and you can not see it all in ten days. You will certainly need longer than that to decide where you want to live on a long term basis if that is your intention. It took me 23 years to finally buy here, before getting a home in the Rethymnon area. Horses for courses Wink

The North coast, ie Sitia to Chania and further West is generally more accessible from both Airports, because of the National Highway, but there are plenty of places worth looking at on the South coast. Bear in mind that in the winter, weather plays a big part in terms of accessibility, and in more remote areas this may be a problem. It can be cold, windy, wet and really rather inhospitable in Crete.

In October, from a practical point of view when you visit, you should not have a problem with finding somewhere to stay on a short term basis and should be able to travel around easily since it is end of season.

Enjoy your trip!

Kathleen

Paul,
Thanks for the reply, and the advise we are looking forward to our first trip to Crete.

Point taken about opinions hahaha Grin

cheers. Zeus AKA (Pete)

Kathleen,

Thanks for the pointers, Unfortunately we dont have 23 years!!!!! only about 2 before we need to make the break.  We choose October knowning that the main season was wrapping up, mainly for  being able to get about better.

We are also planning a short trip in early January for a week or so.

In the next 2 years we plan to return as often as we can spending longer trips to the island in 08.

Thanks regards The Zeus's
