The German Pneumonologists Association has just issued the results of latest research with both adults and children that show that the Mediterranean diet reduces by 50 per cent the risk of developing asthma and chronic bronchitis and other respiratory diseases.
The first research was conducted in the USA that included some 43,000 people aged 40-75. The second took place in Greece with the participation of 690 children aged 7-18.
The German pheumonia association says that chronic respiratory diseases are attributed to the disturbed balance of the body's metabolism. This can be settled through the consumption of healthy and well-balanced foods i.e. the Med diet, (and of course the Crete diet).
As we all know, the Mediterranean diet includes daily intake of vegetables, fruit, breadstuffs, fish, dried fruits and olive oil.
The research concluded that children who eat little fruit and vegetables have a higher risk of developing asthma and allergies.
German specialists advise people to consume red grapes that are used for the production of red wine and which contain polyphenol that prevents the inflammation of the lungs.
Carotene B, which is found in oranges, apples and fresh tomatoes, also helps in combating asthma and allergies. Moreover, dried fruits contain Vitamin E and magnesium that contributes to the good functioning of lungs.
