I'm coming to Stalis for a week in August and my friend has just let me down. Is it safe to come to Crete as a solo female traveller. Will I be ok going sightseeing in a hire car or should I go on tours? What about eating out and going to the beach?
Any advice would be gratefully welcome. I'm blonde and had a few problems in Morocco even when I was with a male friend!
Thanks
Lucy

Lucy, I am probably quite a lot older than you.

Following the death of my partner thirteen years ago I took the then GIANT step of coming to Crete alone. I had no problems. More recently, this year, taking the opportunity of getting a cheap flight to Crete, albeit to my home in Crete,, I travelled alone, without my current partner Pat, since he could not get time off work, once again I had no problems.

Hire a car, (Possibly cheaper from UK...send me a PM if you wish!) do your own thing, and enjoy yourself. Be sensible where you choose to go and who you associate with, much as you would in UK, and you will be fine.

Biggest problem is getting some one to put the suntan lotion on your back!!

You'll get no problems from the Cretans. We were on a practically deserted beach yesterday and my wife Alex wondered off to explore on her own like you do. When she came back after about half an hour she said this is the only place where she feels really safe on her own. This was in a quiet area that gets few tourists, I don't know if it would be the same in one of the busy resorts though. All the same, exercise sensible caution. It feels a much safer place than the UK despite the two guns for every head of the population. (so where's our four then ?) Smiley

you are busted.....
you sold the guns to make a profit. Shocked
next time i want a cut in the deal.
the guns are given free by the local authorities when you spend your first 10 years on the island. its like a birthday gift for being here Wink  Cool Roll Eyes

to the author: common sence is what you need. in no country is safe, just that in some location in some countried its bit better. your biggest problem will be kamakia Smiley Smiley

Lucy,

I've been holidaying in Crete for several years on my own as a single female. It's only been fairly recently that a friend accompanies me on some of my trips. I'm normally over 2-3 times a year (this year I shall be over 5 times!!!).
I fell in love with Crete & have some good friends, both Cretan & British. I love the place so much I've just bought a house, for holidays now, but with a view for a permanent move.

I have never had any problems whilst on holiday in Crete. You will be able to sunbathe & swim peacefully on your own with no hassles, IF you are approached a shake of the head will be sufficient to deter. A good book & some form of music will help.
Eating & drinking in the bars & Tavernas on your own is a perfectly acceptable thing to do, however, you will probably meet up with other holidaymakers. You will find the staff in the Tavernas will go out of their way to make you feel welcome & look after you. If you want to, take a book to read in the taverna while awaiting your order.
As for trips, you can either hire a car & do your own thing, or go on an organised tour. The choice is yours.

Happy holidays
Ros

Thanks everyone for all of your advice.  I feel much happier about holidaying alone in Crete now and have gone from possibly cancelling to really looking forward to it  Smiley

So I've been advised to talk to people and be sociable so here goes...............If anyone fancies meeting up for a drink in Stalis between 14th-21st August PM me. It's great to make new friends all over the world  Cool
