I need regular Thyroid Function Tests as I have Hypothyroidism.  The last time I went for a test, I paid at the private clinic in Aghios Nikolaos.  It turned out to be an expensive test and I wondered if anybody has used the hospital for this blood test and if so could let us know the details. Thanks.

If you are using Thyroxine the tablets are extremely cheap!  I pay around 3 Euros for 3 months supply but of course  it will depend on the strength, even so Thyroxine s one of the cheapest drugs on the market.  The blood test however, cost me 115 Euros!  It may be that I chose an expensive clinic, I don't know I didn't shop around but it just means that instead of an annual blood test, I'll make it every 2 years or if I feel that the balance isn't right, by my symptoms.

No two blood tests are alike and the cost will depend upon the complexity of the tests and the cost of the various chemicals required to perform the tests. The cost of the PSA tests for prostate cancer is about 42 euros, for instance. The cost of blood tests on the NHS tends to be hidden and is not necessarily cheaper!

If you have IKA it will all be covered by them although it takes a bit of running around as usual.

I haven't had my thyroid tested for about two years, yes really bad I know, so bare with me if I get things out of sequence and of course this could only apply to Rethymno, believe it or not the things can vary depending on whether IKA themselves have the relevant doctors or not. In Rethymno there is or there wasn't the last time I went, an IKA thyroid doctor.

I went to the private thyroid doctor who wrote out the tests, although now I believe that an IKA pathalogos can do this. Took receipt but never bothered to claim the money back for the visit which I could of done as IKA didn't have the relevant doctor on their staff. Then went to IKA they then re-wrote tests out on one of their forms. Some tests could be done by them, one for sure could only be done at the hospital, the scan on my thyroid could only be
done by one of the two private clinics who work together with IKA ( you don't pay as long as you have a paper from the IKA office) and any other tests could be done via a private microbiologist and the money claimed back as long as the original paper was stamped by IKA stating that the test couldn't be carried out by IKA themselves.

All results need to be retrieved from the various testing places and then back to doctor to tell you what's what, that's of course if you haven't suffered a heart attack due to the stress of the running a round. Perhaps now you know why I  haven't been for a couple of years!! Grin

The running around and being sent to abut 30 different departments seems to be par for the course around this place!  I often wonder if they don't watch us as they inform us to go to "this" or "that" department and then chuckle as they see us arrive only to be told, it's not the corret one and you need to go.................well, you know the format.

I stupidly didn't go for a thyroid function test during my first 2 years here on Crete and became ill because I needed an adjustment on my medication.  Having read a bit more online now, I realised it was the new climate and the strain that had on my metabolism in general, let alone having to work in the exceptional temperatures!  Learned my lesson though - so will have one at least every year to keep an eye on things.

The new IKA building in Heraklion has a thyroid doctor ,and the  ultrasound machine to scan the thyroid there.

If you have an IKA book, you don`t pay for the blood tests or the ultrasound tests.

I am lucky enough to have a doctor in the village where I live, she made all the arrangements for me, but IKA still gave me the run around when I was there.

I was told I had to go to the local hospital for all the results, this was untrue as you get blood test results by 4 in the afternoon at IKA on the same day you get the tests.

The staff in IKA are notoriously xenophobic, they will give you the wrong information, they will make you run around and they will lie to you and have a good laugh with other staff over doing this to you.

If you ever have to go to IKA, ask if there are any Greeks waiting to be seen to that can speak English, and ask them to help you with your enquiries, most are very helpfull. One woman who was Greek was waiting for her results, seeing that I was treated badly ,she shouted at the woman behind the desk and told her she should be ashamed of herself for treating non Greeks in a bad way, she even said  " If you were in England , they wouldn`t treat you in this way". The missing test result paper was  soon found !

Binx,

I'm amazed at your experience of dealing with IKA; both my wife and I have never had the slightest trouble with any of the staff, they usually go out of their way to be helpful. Yes, some of them have very little English, and are possibly a bit embarassed when they can't direct us properly.

I have oxygen at home, and am able to reclaim 90% of the cost, so I troop along every month with my invoice, and usually it takes about 10 minutes from arrival to departure with the money.

One doctor did berate me for not speaking Greek, but the next time I saw him, he'd forgotten about it and accepted my English quite happily - even doctors have bad days, it seems.  Smiley

PS The blood test results are available at the haematology clinic on the same day - but only the standard general blood chemistry, haemoglobin and cell counts.  Some tests require the samples to be sent to Athens, and take longer.
