Hi. We need to recover our pergola at our house near Rethymno. The bamboo strips we used previously got blown away over the winter. We have been advised not to use bamboo again as our site is too windy. Can anyone advise or recommend or supply and install a more windproof alternative that does not require planning permission ?
Many thanks
Malc

How did you fix your bamboo ?.
we have two tiled pergolas and one that is just bamboo.
we have it stapled all the way along the bamboo ,we used loads of hooped staples, sorry I cannot think of any other covering that would withstand the strong winds here..
have a friend here who secures his bamboo with flexible ties and also crisscrosses it with wire and then takes it down in the winter.

We also live in a windy location and our pergolas are covered with long white plastic strips interwoven between the top struts and held in place by aluminium tubes which are screwed onto the inside of the pergola.  We've had ours for three+ years and the big advantage is you can take them down before the beginning of each season and pressure wash them back to their pristine best.  There's a small outfit in Chania does the work and I'd be surprised if there isn't a similar operation in your area.  You can choose many colours but our houses is all white so the white plastic blends in well - even though I'll admit it doesn't sound like it would.

The advantages are - long lasting, no damage in the strongest of winds, securely held in place, easy to clean and offers some protection from the rain during the winter months.  We paid around 300 euros to cover a 5m x 4m roof.

I've hopefully attached a pic which will give you an idea of what it looks like.  If you need the details of the supplier then I'll try and get them for you.

The name of the owner is Mr Basmaris and his premises are at 70 Gogoni Street which is the road you would have to turn off from if going to the main electricity building i.e. where all the electric bills are paid.

His shop is on the right hand side if driving from Chania and is quite small.  He speaks pretty good English so perhaps best to phone him first if not sure how to get there.  His numbers are 2821076162 0r 6973422594.  If you see Masterstore - a big red building on the left - then you've gone too far.

He's very efficient and comes to your house first, measures everything up and then returns in a few days with the covering and, if you want, wind blinds.  As you can see from the attached pic, we've just had the top coverings and two wind blinds fitted (with handles to wind up and down) and the total price was 830 euros.  The top coverings were 240 euros and our pergola area is 4m x 2.5m so that should give you an idea of the general cost.

I doubt if Mr Basmaris of Chania would come as far as Rethymno. Anyone know of anyone that can supply and fit this type of plastic or vinyl covering to Pergolas near Rethymno ?

Thanks
Malc

Hi Malc,
We are the far side of Rethymno [travelling from Chania] and Mr Basmaris happily came following our phone call, provided us with a quote which we accepted, and will fit the coverings on our next trip out in July. He provides coverings in plastic or fabric in a range of colours.

Cheap shower curtains.....

Interweaving materials on wood is no good, accumilation of rain or moistness rots the wood.

Cheap hosepipes... yellow on outside black on inside (Lidle),run along the length of pergoda and  secured, secure the shower curtain to  hosepipes and you have good shelter.

The material, as per photo provided by Topdriller is removable. My brother in law has it at his house now for about three years. They take it down in the winter and as far as I know it's still in perfect condition.

There is a really good tent place in Rethymno on the small road that cuts through from the main road down to the square of the unknown soldier. I'm not sure if they do this covering, but I would imagine that after being in business for years they would also move on with the times and have this covering.

And don't forget if any-one would like their pergola stripped back to the fresh wood and then sealed, to prevent any damage from rotting wood etc to the material that Binx mentioned,  then my company Soda Blast Hellas is more than happy to do that for you. Certainly works out cheaper than having to replace your pergola in the future!
