Hi
I know we haven't quite moved across to Crete yet, but as usual, I was confronting obstacles before we are faced with them, and was considering receiving bills, letters and documents all in Greek (bearing in mind my limits at the moment are please, thank you, hello, etc).
I don't want to plague the life out of the Greek friends we have and potential friends, who may quickly learn to avoid us.  Sad
So thinking laterally, I had a go at scanning a Greek document, and using my OCR software set to Greek to read it, I then used babel and google translate to try to make some sense of it.
This seemed successful (to a point), so I wondered whether anyone had tried this at a somewhat deeper level than the copy of a tax number registration I used?

Regards
Anna

the bills you will receive will be easy to understand .
Most of the clerks in the offices and the cashiers in the payment office and banks will usually speak English if you have any queries.
OTE has english pages eg.
http://oteshop.ote.gr/portal/page/portal/OTESHOP/MyServices/Mye-Bill
as does dei
http://www.dei.gr/ecHome.aspx?lang=2
bill explanation here
http://www.dei.gr/Documents/LOGARIASMOS_EN.html
Water bills are paid to your local council.
you can set up a direct debit for most bills but not the Water bill, just take your most recent bill to your bank and they will set it up for you .

Be really careful using the translate websites for translating Greek to English as they don't always translate in the way that you intended the words to be used.

When I wrote the brochures for my newly formed company I thought I'd use the translation site to give me some ideas. Speaking Greek and writing Greek for advertising purposes are two entirely different things, but I needed to give the graphic designer & co some-thing to work with as he had no idea what a Soda Blaster was. Any-way when I put in a sentence containing the word "stripping' the translation service translated the word correctly, well it would have been correct had I gone in to the business of removing my clothes and not paint etc

Thanks Latsida.
The URLs very helpful! At least I now know where to find what we need to pay! When the time comes anyway.

Anne-Marie, I see what you are saying about using translation sites, and agree that they are pretty useless if you are trying to translate out. But for translating back to your own language, I think they are pretty useful. I go into greek webpages a fair bit and use the translate fpage facility. You just have to use a bit of thought sometimes to get at the actual meaning. Can be a laugh.

At least stripping in Greece isn't as cold as stripping in the UK! Nor, I think, would there be as much to remove! (Paint of course!  Grin)
