Hi I'm after some info regarding the Koutolotis ravine heading towards Spilli, I know the fresh water runs through it down to Previli beach but wanted a bit more info if anyone has some knowledge it would be helpful as i have clients who ask about it every now and again

Also i heard a story regarding Giorgopolis and King George and something about Cyprus trees being planted to ward off illness???

If anyone can expand on these questions i would be very grateful

I seem to recall reading that the eucalyptus trees planted throughout Georgeopolis were at the time believed to ward-off mosquitos.  Also that Georgeopolis was the last place in Europe where malaria could be caught.

I have heard many stories about this ravine. Apparently it has been used in times of invasion for the locals to hide out in. Although looking at the rock face it's very hard to imagine that any-one could get up there and hide out in one of the caves. Apparently, I believe it was during the Turkish invasion, they forbid the Cretans to go to church and there for the Cretans turned a small cave at the edge of the road on the other side of the road in to a church where it still stands today. They used to climb down every couple days when the coast was clear and go to pray and then return to their hiding place.
Obviously it was not like it is today. In fact up until a few years ago there were not real steps etc.
Again how true this all is I don't really know, but I have heard this story from several people.

In 1899, to honour Prince George of Greece, who had arrived to officialise the Union of Crete with Greece, Almyroupolis was renamed Georgioupolis and made the co-capital of Sfakia Prefecture (later abolished).

More information on it on several sites if you Google it under Kourtaliotiko Gorge, Ian.

When stopping at the viewing area it is advisable to check out the wind direction before opening the car doors, it is almost always strong enough to take them off if you are facing in the wrong direction! An old local Cretan friend recalls the night (early morning) he was returning from Plakias on his motorbike after visiting a girlfriend. His lights failed, in the pitch darkness he was afraid to go any further. He was forced to wait quite some time until to his relief a car came through which he was able to flag down and follow, getting out safely, back to Rethymnon.

I have in the past made the climb down to the bottom of the Gorge, amazingly even in the full heat of summer the waterfall is still visible. The chapel at the bottom of the path is still maintained.

As always, thanks gang for the info really useful as didn't know about the waterfall as from the road, it only looks like a dry river bed,

Also the Georgopolis info is useful for my guests as they will often ask and i don't like making stuff up

Thanks again,

just one small correction

Prince George arrived in 1899 to be High Commissioner of an autonomous Crete nominally still under the Sultan. The major European powers specifically refused Crete permission to join with Greece at that time.

It was not until nearly 14 years later that on December 1st 2013 Crete formerly became part of Greece
