I agree that split type is not comfortable.
We change recently the unit in the leavingroom ( a Frigidaire split unit) and we have now a LG inverter unit : it's day vs night.
And, if you buy class A/A model, you will reduce a lot the electricty bill comparing with old split class B/B or C/C.
I think you may be getting mixed up here - "split type" means that it has a compressor unit outside, and a fan unit on the wall inside the property. i.e. they are "split"
Both the old type of aircon and the inverter type are available as split units.
We have installed an LG inverter a/c this month, and it is a split type. They are over twice the price of the older generation units, but are more economical.
I understand the old type will be made illegal by the EU next year, but I suspect that the cheap Chinese units may still be available here !!
If used for heating the thing to look out for is a high COP (coefficient of performance) in the spec.
Whether it is cheaper than oil fired central heating in the long run remains to be seen, heating oil prices could be going up, but the price of electricity is bound to rise in the near future as well.
For a true comparison to our oil central heating, we would need to have electric heating in all living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms, plus the hot water tank. Personally I shudder to think how much that would cost.
We choose what is best for the temperatures on a particular day, and use either logs, air con heating, or our central heating.
