Yes LJF, this is definite. I said were planning because all this started in February and despite the disapproval and claims and strikes of the doctors and pharmacists associations, the law has been voted and published this December 16.
Whatever the social security a patient had before, from January 1, 2012 on, he will be allowed to visit an EOPYY-accredited doctor (EOPYY = Εθνικός Οργανισμός Παροχών Υπηρεσιών Υγείας = National Organisation of Benefits of Health Services) (There are minor exceptions: army, navy, arent in the system yet) either in a medical care center, either at his private practice and the consultation will be free. For a consultation, the doctor will receive from EOPYY the fabulous sum of 10/visit, with a maximum of 2 visits/patient/month and a maximum of 200 patients/month.
Accredited doctors will consult in two ways and only during 4 hours/day:
- medical centers: upon appointment (tel.: 184)
- in private: during working hours with or without appointment.
Outside accredited working hours the patient pays. Those working hours are decided by the doctor himself, but have to be clearly mentioned outside his practice so the patient knows what to expect.
This new system aims at reducing the enormous frauds that were common since 50 years and to drastically reduce the medical care expenses for reasons you all know. Medical prescription booklets and ID-books will be discarded. You will receive a social security card. Medical prescriptions are already electronic.
Although the law has been published and is effective from January 1 on, being active in the medical business, no details because of danger of self-promotion punishment I can tell it seems obvious that it will take another few months before the organization will work properly. F.i. How and where will the list of accredited doctors be published? Who will be those doctors? How are they going to be selected? And much more. Ask an IKA employee for details and you will get Δεν ξέρω
Doctors associations are still urging their members not to sign any agreement with EOPYY to boycott it, hoping that it will be either withdrawn, either changed from top to bottom.
As always: Wait and see.

Pluto, is this definite? Only you say that ministers 'were planning'. I only ask because my partner has an acute health problem at the moment and we are dashing here, there and everywhere - it would be nice if things were more centralised.

The AMKA number is a social security number for all Greek citizens and foreigners living and working in Greece or entitled to benefit from the social security system.
The number is your birth date followed by 5 follow-up figures. Thats why each person in a couple has his own number.
The main reason for introducing an AMKA number earlier this year is simple: they (the ministers) were planning to unify the social security, abolishing the different social security organisms. From the 01-01-2012 on there will be no more IKA, OAEE, etc. but only one EOPYY: Greek (unified) Organisation for Health Care.
Patients will be able to chose any doctor to go to lists of accredited doctors will be published- be they independent, employee, (= having before 2012 IKA or OAEE or OPAD ) and receive free medical care.
Foreigners have IKA and had to go to an IKA doctor. From 2012 on they can go to any EOPYY-accredited doctor, in a medical center or private.
Introducing your AMKA number into any computer system gives an town hall employee or a doctor or access to your data. As an example: electronic medical prescriptions are only accessible via your AMKA number.
The reason why, in the past, IKA doctors in medical care centers didnt pay attention to people having or not an AMKA number is simple: they dont use the computer programs to write electronic medical prescription or complementary tests, which IKA, OAEE, OPAD or OGA-accredited doctors are/were obliged to use in their private practice.

I thought this might be the case but wanted to check. We are paying a large proportion of our budget for private health cover but at Vamos reception the E111 was the one they wanted to see.
Though when our god-daughter was injured when here on holiday last May they didn't ask for any ID and refused any payment for the treatment - no waiting, no admin there was an injured child  Smiley

Why is there an AMKA number? you ask
well because there are various national insurance organisations here ( not just IKA ) who before gave  you a different personal number (some people had more than one,) this  AMKA number applies to all these organisations so simplifying any dealing you may have for health, work  pensions or benefits  Wink

We had never heard of an AMKA number until it was mentioned on this site earlier this year; and we have been living here for years and using IKA doctors. No mention from them or on the annual renewal of the IKA Blue Book. We went to IKA, apologised that we were idiot foreigners and within twenty-four hours (a five minute return visit next day) had our AMKA numbers added to our Blue Books and had a separate piece of oficial paper to keep. No charge!

Why is there an AMKA number? Your gues is as good as ours. Probably to keep one more person employed in writing things down in addition to the superb lady doing the same thing on a computer.

if you have IKA health cover then you should have an AMKA number , it is printed at the top of the first page with your details.
here is a website that explains the procedure to obtain an Amka number if you do not have one already.
http://athens.angloinfo.com/countries/greece/socsecurity.asp
EHIC Card is only meant for short trips or holidays.

Daveellen

It seems you should be using your E111 Health Card, you are not entitled to more, if you are not making any contributions to the public coffers.

If you are over 65 it is a different matter because you would then get clearance from UK with documents to present to the local IKA office, where you would then get your IKA health book and be asked to get an AMKA number. In the latter situation AMKA only helps to ensure you get the subsidized rate for medicines when you get a prescription from an IKA doctor.

The AMKA card does not apply if you are not contributing to IKA or the other national contributory schemes. If you are not earning income in Greece you should not be entitled to state medical support (except in an emergency), only private. That is my understanding anyway.

Hope that is helpful.

Gerald

Treat fairly, those who treat you fairly. To shout is a sign of weakness. Confucious may have said: "Don't be easily hurt or offended. Take a deep breath, count to 10. Log off and make a cup of tea.

Went to Vamos Health Centre recently. Saw doctor but he said we should get an AMKA number?
Is this relevant if we are not working? Don't want to get into a clash with UK v Greece NHS.
