I was told today in the pharmacy that this is the last day that insurance prescriptions will be written.

Does this mean that a reciprocal agreement will exist throughout Europe that Greeks will have to pay full price.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.

Unfortunately I see even more activity on the cost of living thread.

I think this has something to do with the Strike by Pharmacists and the fact that they will no longer accept insurance prescriptions as they are owed so much money by the insurance organisations.
how universal the strike will be here on Crete and whether they will carry out their threat remains to be seen.

The  pharmasists  are owed by the government  63  million euros, kathemarini news  last  year  reported it.

I find  the on line  paper to be  most  innacurate at times.

I caught them out twice by reports ,  over exaggerated reports  that an earthquake  occured  scaling  4.2, and another on a different day  was reported  off Skiathos  measuring  3.8.

I went on to  the  earthquake site and checked it out ,  no  reports on any  big  quakes at all,  and none  in  Greece.

I  find  Kathemarini  to be a scare mongering  paper,  the reports   incite  trouble and  untruths,  innuendos and  false  prophecies,  but  that  is my opinion.

Yesterday evening our pharmacy arranged for all prescriptions to be collected in advance of the pharmacy strike due to unpaid pharmacy bills by the state.

We have been told from now on it is uncertain if they will be able to supply all medications (Neoral has been withdrawn again from Greece).

Those on IKA or other state medical insurance might have to pay full price to the pharmacy then claim the cost back from IKA.

We have been warned this situation is volatile subject to daily changes according to the political crisis & is not likely to be resolved until after the elections.

Greece is on the brink of a severe healthcare crisis as shortages of medicines are exacerbated by panic among patients unable to get cancer or cardiac drugs, pharmacists have warned.

The insolvent country's worsening liquidity has led to public insurers being unable to pay bills and prescription drugs running dangerously low, say chemists. On Wednesday, the sector staged a one-day strike to highlight the "emergency situation".

"I give it 15 days. If the European Union doesn't release the loans it has promised by then, there will be scenes of utter chaos here," said Dimitris Karageorgiou, secretary general of the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association.

Strike on May 23 and stop EOPYY decided to credit the officers of the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association, responding to non-payment of debts of the organization to reach 270 million and liabilities of insurance funds in 2011 amounting to 250 million.
According to Mega, as was known, said EOPPY inability to directly pay his debts, and OGA does not give him money from the day membership of the body while the IKA had to freeze pensions for 130 million euros earmarked for pharmacists.
The President of the National Pharmaceutical Association Theodore Adams notes that the collapse EOPYY helpless by the state and that 92% of Greek policyholders left without medical care, saying that pharmacies can not withstand the weight.
The President of EOPYY Gerasimos Voudouris he stresses that the new proposal Pharmaceutical Association to provide 50% of debts by next Monday to serve the beneficiaries and the remainder by the end of the month.
The Honorary President of the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association Dimitris Vagionia refers to budget 800 million euros by the end of the year, saying the EOPYY owes 540 million and our "mock"-as-emphasized.
At the same time, after a week, the electronic prescription system continues to function poorly, despite assurances that the company has undertaken the work that Wednesday would be placed in full operation.
The CEO of Electronic Government Social Insurance Vlassis Sfyroera talks about pilot stage in Monday by the system yesterday, saying that from next Monday will be back in operation, and even upgraded.
However, the weaknesses of the electronic prescription system that could not bear the weight of the increased number of prescriptions has brought to their limits contracted doctors, who are from last week to prescribe manuscripts.

Our Pharmacy has told us that no prescription drugs will be honoured for this week - maybe next week or until the dipute with the non payment is sorted (thats never then!!).  This applys obviously to Grek citizens as well as us.  Some of the drugs the old ladies are on in our village are going to cost them a fortune to buy now, so what are they going to do? Ugh!!!!

As Binx rightky notes, the elderly are going to suffer, as are the poor and infirmed. I also wonder about the timing of this strike ie 3 weeks before the elections.

You also have to ask why most of the prescription drugs here are branded rather than the far cheaper generic varieties.  Branded drugs cost considerably more to buy which gives both the pharmaceutical companies and the pharrmacies a far higher profit margin.

The interesting point re the timing of the strike is whether Greeks will vote for the austerity parties in the hope of getting further bailouts to prop up their ailing health system or vote for the anti austerity parties because they're becoming ever more angry re the ongoing situation?

Unfortunately, with the EU holding back the next installment of the loan (breaking the loan agreement so therefore it could be argued to be void) until the elections it's a big problem.

Oh  I do hope  this problem will be resolved,  the elderly, infirm and babies will suffer,  how the hell can they go to IKA many miles away to claim,  most of the dear elderly in the village have difficulty in walking as it is,  and no transport.

I would hate to think  some  enterprising  shifty  person, will jump to the opportunity of organising  a mini bus or some thing, to transport  people who have no car to IKA,  then rip them off with a fee, God  knows   we are all struggling as it is,  and the poor  elderly with their pensions cut are worse off.

It breaks my heart to see the elderly villigers  struggling,  and  even though they struggle when we pass by them they  give us bags of oranges ,  they don`t want anything for them they just give, they know we support the village  all year round.

I wish there was some way I could help everyone,  all I have to give is love and  respect,  mutual respect and  a most  heartfelt  love for the elderly here.

Bloody  government  wants  throwing out and replaced,  and that  fat   swine , I forget his name,  needs  to stop showing how well he lives  while  Greeks are  suffering, the man is a walking bean bag.

Latest on  IKA and  medication.

We had to go  and get medication  Tuesday, we were told by the doctor  we have to pay full price.

The  pharmacist  told us  we have to produce  forms  of medication to  IKA within one week only ,  as that is the time frame.

Take your forms  from pharmacy to IKA,  take also your bank book and passport,  IKA will pay  into your bank account the money owed to you for medication.

We have fully paid  NI contributions in the UK in the past,  now we pay twice for our  medication in this country and UK.

We get  free prescriptions  in the UK.

The only reason  I suspect that  IKA want  our bank book, is to see how much money  we have to try to catch the tax evaders,  another government  ploy .

We  go to  IKA on  Friday  to see what is what ,  I will let  you all know  the experience ,  another  flask and  sarnies  job I bet..!!

I hate to tell you this, but as you live full time in Crete, you are not entitled to free prescriptions in the UK. (Yes, I know you paid in all your working life but that does not count!)

To get free prescriptions in the UK (I guess because you are a pensioner) you have to be registered with a GP and have a UK address. Both you and your GP are defrauding the NHS. The GP could be struck off if he knowingly conspires in this.

.......and no, I am not being negative, just factual!
