We have noticed over the last few weeks that virtually all our night insects have disappeared. There are no moths, beetles etc...There are no insects around the outside lights. Even during the day there are fewer cicadas and only a couple of wasps. Is this happening anywhere else?

You must have sent them all over to Bury !!!!!!

This might explain why, although there are lots of flowers on my vegetables few are being pollinated....any comments?

Just a thought.  There has been a lot of unease about cases of Nile Fever in areas of Athens caused by mosquitoes and there was talk of spraying to try to control the spread.  I think there's been a case in Crete, so it's possible that spraying is taking place here too.

I don't know if that's why you have less insects.  It is probably a wide spectrum insecticide that they use and would probably knock out most other bugs too.

We should all be taking a little more care this year not to be bitten by mosquitoes.  I know we are used to it and think a few bites are acceptable, but you never know if the mosquito that bit you is carrying this Nile fever.  Apparently the carriers are the usual little ones that bite at night and not the bigger stripey tiger mosquitoes that bite during the day too.

Symptoms may be few, a slightly raised temperature and a general feeling of being under the weather, but they may be worse in people with poor health. 

Cover up, use mosquito nets on doors and windows and repellent on exposed areas of skin in the evenings.
