Taxing tourists so directly is stupid. They should have sneaked it through some other way.

We've stayed at the Elounda Ilion Hotel. Smiley

1) sneaked it in how, they already hiked the VAT in restaurants/bars and upped the hotel tax

2) did you stay at that hotel this year, if so did you pay Tourist Tax

3) I find the charges for basic beach bed outragious in most cases.  Some beaches offer facilities like shower, life guard, toilet and clean the beach, then I find it acceptable, but many do not.

I was reading this article today re the tourist tax for Balearic Islands, that will be 1 euro per night for up to 3* then 2 euro per night for 4* and above - to take effect from 1st July 2016

Families of 4, who have already booked and paid, say it could add £70 to their holiday

The tax in Spain will vary depending where you go and what type of accmmodation you stay.

If Greece are going to introduce it, lets hope they keep it low and not start increasing it every year or so, as some people will be looking to go somewhere they do not have this EXTRA cost

..... said the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) for 50,000 #Greek #Hotel owners and businesses in a letter to the Greek Government.

Just weeks before the launch of the summer tourism season, hoteliers cannot believe that a planned new overnight tax will be the catalyst, the final straw to ruin the one big contributor - tourism to the Greek economy.

Here we go again, the reason this overnight tax is needed is to help Greece give a positive view to the international lenders who are supposed to loan Greece  a further 5billion euros in aid to keep the economy afloat.

It has to be stated that the current government, the communist leaning Syriza made the proposal. It probably viewed the increasing numbers of arrivals to Greece which stood at 23.6 million visitors in 2015.

The Greek media is reporting that the Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos and Alternate Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura are facing the tourism sector backlash. SETE President Andreas Andreadis is demanding the Syriza government to deny this tax is going ahead.

Visitors to the Greek islands have up to now not had to pay any "sleep tax". It is not a new tax in Europe however. Across the continent, many local councils have imposed a sleep tax in the last couple of years. For those familiar with it know it costs around one or two euros per room per night. The proposed Greek “sleep tax” is planned to be one euro daily per hotel room. It has not been mentioned whether the tax will be collected in cash at the reception desk on check in or at the cashiers at time of check out, as is the case elsewhere.

In case this new sleep tax goes ahead and it looks likely, I thought I would give the heads up to visitors to Crete who may not have small change available in euros on arrival if cash has to be handed over at check in.[/i]

Treat fairly, those who treat you fairly. To shout is a sign of weakness. Confucious may have said: "Don't be easily hurt or offended. Take a deep breath, count to 10. Log off and make a cup of tea.
